Understanding Subtraction
Key Vocabulary Words: subtract: you can subtract a part from the whole to find the missing part
difference: is the amount that is left after you subtract minus sign: (-) equal sign: (=) subtraction sentence: is a way to show a subtraction problem 7 - 3 = 4 missing part: a missing part of a whole can be found when the whole and the other part are known
take away: taking away parts from a whole is one interpretation of subtraction
compare: comparing two quantities to find how much more/less one quantity is than the other is one interpretation of subtraction
same amount: the difference can be written at the beginning or end of a subtraction sentence, as long as the number or expression on each side of the equal sign are the same amount
5 + 2 = 7 is the same as 7 = 5 + 2
Games to play: Missing Part: Choose a set of objects and show your child (whole number); take a cup and put a few objects in a cup (part) which becomes the missing part; have child count the known part (objects not in the cup); ask child to tell you how many are in the cup.
